Robusta vs Arabica — What's the Difference?

You've probably heard that Arabica is 'the good one' and Robusta is 'the cheap one.' The truth is a bit more interesting — especially when it comes to Vietnamese Robusta.
Two beans, two personalities
Almost all coffee you drink comes from one of two species: Arabica or Robusta. They grow in different places, taste different, and shine in different brewing methods.
Arabica — the delicate one
Arabica grows high in the mountains, usually between 1,000 and 2,000 metres. It ripens slowly, and that slowness shows up in the cup: bright acidity, floral or fruit notes, and a light, silky body.
It's the star of most specialty cafés because it rewards careful brewing. But it also needs perfect conditions to grow, which makes it more expensive.
Robusta — the bold one
Robusta thrives in warmer, lower-elevation regions. It's hardier, cheaper to grow, and produces beans with roughly twice the caffeine of Arabica.
The reputation problem: most Robusta on the world market is grown cheaply and roasted poorly. That's the "harsh, bitter" Robusta most people know.
Good Robusta is a very different story.
Why Vietnamese Robusta is special
Vietnam produces about 40% of the world's Robusta. In the Central Highlands (Đắk Lắk, Lâm Đồng, Gia Lai), red basalt soil and 500–900 metres of elevation create ideal growing conditions.
When Vietnamese Robusta is hand-picked at peak ripeness and roasted carefully, it doesn't taste harsh. It tastes like dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and molasses — with a syrupy body that holds up beautifully in espresso or with milk.
Side-by-side comparison
| Arabica | Vietnamese Robusta | |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine | ~80 mg per cup | ~140 mg per cup |
| Taste | Bright, fruity, floral | Bold, chocolatey, nutty |
| Body | Light and silky | Thick and syrupy |
| Best for | Pour-over, filter, black coffee | Espresso, phin, milk drinks |
Which one should you buy?
Here's a simple way to choose:
- You drink your coffee black and love delicate flavour? Start with our Arabica.
- You love strong espresso, iced coffee, or coffee with milk? Go with our Robusta.
- Can't decide? Build your own custom blend — pick the exact ratio in five seconds.
Most Italian espresso blends, by the way, contain 20–40% Robusta. There's a reason for that: it gives espresso its signature crema and body.
